Music Monday: New York is Killing Me (Gil Scott-Heron "I'm New Here")

Gil Scott-Heron "New York is Killing Me"

off his latest album...

If that song alone does not make you want to experience this man's work, boo on you.

I'm really enjoying this album.  Gil Scott-Heron is able to do what most poets can't, fuse spoken word with music without it sounding like he is trying too hard.  Everything just flows.  Nothing is worse than listening to your favorite poet just TALK OVER MUSIC.  That's what a lot of people end up doing, they never find the rhythm necessary to make the combination work.  It also doesn't hurt that the production is surprisingly very good.  A few of the more "musical" standouts for me include New York is Killing Me, Me and The Devil and I'll Take Care of You.
