10 Questions with...Big Sant

1. State your name gangster…
The name is Big Sant (pronounced SUNT) at the end of the month dem boys betta have my check! Respect it! I hail from the great of MISSISSIPPI! I’ve been rapping for over 10 years but I’m not an old head yet!

2. What are some of the songs/mixtapes/albums people may have heard you on?
You can hear me on my mixtape “Top Of Tha Food Chain” Hosted by Dj Joe Braxton outta Houston, Dj Joe Braxton Presents 24/7/365 Mixtape, Dj Panic’s “Tell’em Why You Mad” Vol 1, Dj Stupac’s “Southland Tales Vol 6”…too many to be countin!

3. What are some of your side hustles? (Producer, song writer, engineer etc)
Side Hustles- I’m a songwriter, I ghostwrite for whoever is in need, I’m working on my engineering game…right now it’s the basics, and I’m the dope at this online promo and marketing!

4. How did you get into rapping AND if you weren’t rapping right now what would you be doing?
I got introduced to the game in 92 because my cousin kept going to jail and I’d go next door and take his tapes (he wasn’t using them!). I wrote my 1st verse in 96 and in 98’, I became “dope”!! If I wasn’t rapping I’d be grinding it out in an animation studio or chumping folk off on the radio!

5. Coming from Mississippi who are some of your influences in music?
Coming from Mississippi I didn’t really have any musicians to look up to locally other than blues and gospel singers. I spent every summer in Texas for as long as I could remember so I really latched on to UGK, Fat Pat, S.U.C., Scarface, etc. Mostly Texas figures until I hit like 12 and it was all about No Limit, Cash Money and my folk out in Memphis. Don’t get it twisted, being from the south I jammed my Biggie and 2pac without taking sides. When Andre 3000 got on stage at the Source Awards in 95 and said “the south got something to say” I realized it was time to expand my ear.

6. In your opinion what’s the difference between East Coast, West Coast, Down South and International music AND which side is dominating rap right now?
The difference between the South, East, West, and International music in my opinion is how it’s brought to the table. These artists and their experience along with them being themselves and embracing their culture tells the difference. Everybody has the set of people from their region that have earned the spot as Legends. Right now I feel like the international scene is dominating more because when you cross the water, you get a different vibe. The hip-hop listeners in the U.S. are finicky. Overseas, the hip-hop heads are really excited for new music. The whole set up is different. On the mainland…I feel like the South is still dominating but who knows how long that’s gonna be going on with the lower quality of music that’s coming out nowadays.

7. What is the best album of 2009 so far?
Best album on 2009 so far…no comment….

8.TWO PART QUESTION:
a.      As a rapper are you feeling the effects of the recession and if so how are you working around this crumbling economy? (Shorter studio time, charging more for verses etc)
b.      With album sales steadily declining, is it still profitable to be a rapper?

a. As far as studio time and beats, I’m not feeling the hurt because Big K.R.I.T. (google him!!) looks out for me. Ain’t no pressure on that end.
b. Its still profitable to want a career as a rapper if you know how to hustle. Independent is the way to go and that’s the way I’m gonna keep it until a major write a check with 000,000,000 on it.

9. I tell you that I want to get into the rap game, what’s the first thing you tell me to go out and get and why?

If you were to tell me you wanted to rap…right now…I’d tell you to go get some paper and pen because all that writing in your head shit doesn’t hold any weight with me. After that  go get “Ready To Die, “Me Against the World”, “Ridin Dirty”, “Illmatic”, and “Aquemini”.

10. What can we expect from Big Sant in the upcoming months?
What to expect….”Top Of The Food Chain 2” from me as a solo artist. Me and Big K.R.I.T. are a group called “The Alumni”, so be on the look out for “Friday Night Lights”, “808 Muzik”, and “Spaceagepimpinridindirtychevymuzik”

I’m glad to be apart of this! Look out for Big K.R.I.T and The Alumni’s Smash Singles “Dat All” and “$1000 Outfit”!! Get out there and request it!
