Black 70's Movies Month: Week 4

As we continue on, I give you:

WATTSTAX

This 1973 documentary film focused on the 1972 WattStax concert held to commemorate the 7th anniversary of the Los Angeles Watts Riots.

3 reasons to see this film:
1. In between the musical performances are real people talking about real issues of that time.  It gives you a sense of the true emotions that plagued African Americans around the 70's.  Raw and uncut, no actors, just real people talking about life.   I love the way this movie was put together.  It also has a Spike Lee type of feel to it and if you don't know, I LOVE Spike.
2.  The musical performances.  This is like a documentary with a cool ass soundtrack.  Everyone from Isaac Hayes to The Staples Singers to The Dramatics to The Emotions to Johhnie Taylor to Rufus Thomas and many more filled that stage with pure pride and soul.  And all for only a dollar!
3.  Richard Pryor's crazy ass commentary.  Enough said.
