Black 70's Movies: Week 2

Ok now this isn't a typical "black movie", but seriously what is a "black movie?  Is it a film with a bunch of black actors in it? A film geared towards a black audience? Or a film mainly accepted or related to by black people?  I don't know but number 3 maybe the case with this movie.

THE WARRIORS

Plot: 1 man decides to gather ALL the gangs from the 5 boroughs to create 1 super gang.  The meeting is held waaaaayyyyy the hell up in the Bronx.  The Coney Island Warriors attend, the guy that brought them together gets shot and guess who takes the blame?  Of course the dudes who had to travel the furthest.  SIDEBAR: Yes it really is a 2 plus hour ride from Coney to The Bronx smh.  So the boys must make their way back to their territory w every gang from every neighborhood along the way after them.  That right there is my first reason to see this film.  Great story brought to life.

2nd reason to see this movie: The fight scenes!  As realistic as a 1979 movie fight scene can be but they will still keep you glued to the tube.
3rd reason to see this film, the stories behind it all.  Think about it, gangs were huge in the 70's and this was filmed entirely in NYC.  Just imagine hundreds of gangs some real some fake running around the city to film a movie.  I've heard stories about the real Warriors or the Crazy Homicides or whatever they were called from Coney Island being upset about the movie being filmed on their turf.  Cast members were harassed, their sets were destroyed a few times etc.  There is actually a Greman documentary about the Homicides called Lefty - Erinnerung an einen Toten in Brooklyn
My mom told me stories about some of the gangs of the 70's and I used to laugh.  How could you not with names like The Tomahawks, The Jolly Stompers and the Black Spades, come to find out they were all true and nothing to laugh about (and my mom knows the Tomahawks song!!!lol)
Overall great movie from the late 70's to check out and I hear there is a remake in the works...*sigh*

My runner up:

THE EDUCATION OF SONNY CARSON

This is a damn close runner up.  I don't know where you can find this on dvd but it is on youtube (isn't everything) and is pretty good.  All shot in Brooklyn, mostly Bed Stuy.  Based on the life of Brooklyn gang leader Sonny Carson and his gang the Lords.

Cop :"You wanna know something? Your kind should be locked up from the day you are born."
Sonny: "You wanna know something? We Are."

Classic.
