December is "Black 70's Movies" Month

because I said so.

AND because my next show will welcome back the return of my "RESPECT YA ELDERS" edition of my show!  That's right Respect Ya Elders pt.4 is on the way.  If you don't know what Respect Ya Elders is, it's basically when I do a whole show featuring nothing but old school music (now ya know).  I get soooo much praise when I do this, from ppl my age but also from older ppl who I didn't even know checked out my show so I decided to bring it back with part 4 for the upcoming holiday season. Stay tuned...

NOW what is Black 70's Movies month?  Exactly what the hell it sounds like.  Every week for the month of December I'll give you one of my favorite movies from the 70's that you might want to check out.  I may even throw in a few runner ups that I've heard are really good or that I want to see.

SIDEBAR:  I've been told by certain people of different color and religions that I haven't seen any "real" movies because I haven't seen movies that they consider "classics" such as Jaws, Star Wars, The 007's, Star Trek and all that other fake fantasy Hollywood bullshit that will never happen.  To that I say, fuck ya life!
First off I like realistic movies.  Drama and comedies are on the top of the list.  Followed by indie films. I hate sci fi movies, I find horror films hilarious and I can watch a documentary  type movie any day of the week.  I've seen plenty of movies.  My taste in them maybe a little different but whatever, it's MY TASTE.  I don't have 1 particular favorite but some of my favorites include: City of God, The Color Purple, Imitation of Life (1959 the one with Juanita Moore) Purple Rain, Love Jones, anything by Spike Lee, Coming To America, Premium, Requiem for a Dream, Eve's Bayou, Menace II Society (shiiiiiiiiit) and a host of movies from the 70's including my pick for week 1 for  Black 70's Movies Month:

Claudine
[ CLAUDINE POSTER ]

Simple plot, a hard working man falls for a single mother with 6 kids.  Let the fun begin.
3 reasons to see this film:
1.  Like I said I like realistic movies and this is some realism for yo ass!!  6 damn kids!! and he still chose to mess with her and try and make it work.  Mind you EVERY kid had some kind of problem.  Who wouldn't want to sit through it?
2.  The acting is actually pretty good. Yes it's a 70's film but it isn't a cheesy "blaxploitation" 70's film (not to me anyway).  Diahann Carol and James Earl Jones are great in this film.  Even the kids did a good job.
3.  "Shoulda been number 1 to me"  The soundtrack.  Gladys Knight and the Pips take you through damn near ever emotion/scene with only 7 songs.  Gotta love it!  This soundtrack is seriously in heavy rotation in my Ipod.

Runner ups:

Two words: Irene Cara.  The story of 2 NYC teens 1 black 1 Puerto Rican and the strife their relationship causes between their family, friends and neighborhoods.  Haven't seen it but I'm on the hunt.

JD's Revenge

This movie is just plain silly.  A 1940's hoodlum's spirit possess a New Orleans law student and hunts his murderers. Decent acting and even though I couldn't help but laugh at it I couldn't change the channel.
