Mo'Nique to star in movie version of "Push"
Yeah that 'PUSH"

I was reading the October issue of Essence and they have a very good interview with comedian Mo'Nique. She talks about her career, family and the sexual abuse she encountered from her brother when she was a child. She mentioned that it helped her with the role she will play in the up coming film version of the novel "Push" by Sapphire. I didn't even know she was abused until I read the article. That fact that she is sharing her story is great because it can help so many others who are in similar situations.

Her playing the main character's abusive mother in the movie is a daring move. If you've never read Push, I'm not sure you want to. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that the book is bad, it's actually quite interesting but it's VERY disturbing. It centers around an illiterate teenage Harlem girl who encounters daily sexual abuse from her mother and is pregnant with her second child by her father. So deep, but it will truly leave you speechless after you read it.
This book came out around 96 before all of these "Hoodrat Chronicles", "Gangster till I Die", "Live by the gun..." ghetto ass tales were around. A friend gave it to me in middle school and I started it then but I couldn't finish it until my adult years.
I must say that I'm truly looking forward to seeing how this will turn out but not as much as I'm looking forward to seeing "The Coldest Winter Ever" get turned into a movie. Don't get me started...

I absolutely loved this book. I read the book when I was 15 years old and read it again a few years later (which is something I never do)
The book is very disturbing, but it focuses on situations that a lot of people have been through but are afraid to voice it or put it with everything else in Pandora's box.
When compared with the originator of AA fiction, Donald Goines gave it to you in only a few have been able to portray. Followed up by Sista Souljah's "The Coldest Winter Ever", and next in line would be Sapphire's "PUSH".
These authors make you feel that you are there, going through what the character is going through.
I loved this book and I hope that I will love the movie. And, truthfully, I believe that Mo'nique will play the role the way it was meant to be played.
