Screw the 4th. July 5th 1827

The US may have gained it's independence from Great Britain in 1776 but OUR freedom took a wee bit longer.  Enslaved Africans were emancipated in NY on July 4th 1827 but due to threats of violence were forced to celebrate on the following day, July 5th.  The Weeksville Society is hosting a day of events on the 5th in Brooklyn:
