Six Haitians have been killed in skirmishes over food.
So while the whole world has stopped because the Pope is on tour and our troops are over in Iraq fighting a pointless war, people in Haiti are eating mud pies (yeah mud like dirt and water) and literally killing each other over food. I read about the people in Haiti resorting to eating mud a few months ago and was in shock. The fact that this country has millions of dollars to throw away on this war & the media has time to waste focusing on celebrities getting married while people in other countries are starving is baffling.
Lawmakers To Bush: Help Hungry Haiti!
Six Haitians have been killed in skirmishes over food.
Several members of Congress are calling on President Bush to extend more of a helping
hand to the Haitian people, so hungry that they have been locked in deadly street riots as food prices have surged. Six people have been killed in recent days in the Caribbean island nation, which is so poor that many residents rely on mud cookies as a dietary staple. “We call on President Bush today, help the people of Haiti, feed the children,” said Carolyn Kilpatrick (D-Mich.). Illinois Democrat Jan Schakowsky and New York Rep. Yvette Clarke said it is shameful that the United States can find the funding for war but not to save a starving people. “Ninety-six million dollars is [worth] about seven hours of what we spend right now in Iraq,” Schakowsky said. “I think we might be able to scrape up the money to relieve the immediate crisis right now in Haiti.” Said Clarke: “To have this level of economic instability so close to our border is not in our best interests. And we are looking at strategic partnerships around the world, I think we need to start down south.” Many other members of Congress, including Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-N.Y.), Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) and Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr. (D-Ill.) are among those who have urged the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund to forgive Haiti’s debt, arguing that the money being used to pay the interest on its debt could be used to feed its citizens. “International financial institutions should relieve Haiti of all of its debt, so it could focus its money on providing food to its people,” said Meeks. “And in the event that it can’t just relieve it, it should suspend the payment of the debt by Haiti so it can deal with this humanitarian crisis.” The Rev. Jesse Jackson said that the United States can no longer look away as Haiti suffers. “We can’t just look at the Haitian crisis, and people roaming the streets in desperation [and] political upheaval and shrug our shoulders and make this part of the bureaucratic rhythm [and say] this is the way life is,” said Rev. Jackson. “Life doesn’t have to be this way. We are the number one agricultural producing system in the whole world, and [here] in our hemisphere [is] the most starvation.”
